You Were Asked For: What a Calling Really Is
I work with people I call Originators — multi-passionate, creatively wired, often neurodivergent individuals who are, in the truest sense, channels: people through whom something genuinely new wants to come into the world. They have a calling but find it hard to bring it fully to expression. Sometimes the block is practical: time, money, competing responsibilities. But often it runs deeper than that. It's a confusion about what a calling actually is, what it asks of them, and whether they are truly the right person to answer it. This post is for anyone sitting with that confusion.

Let’s clear up what a calling is NOT
A calling is not a directive from the universe that you're obliged to execute perfectly or else. It's not a single fixed destination. It doesn't have to map onto a recognisable job title, and it absolutely doesn't have to be about paid work. It can morph across the chapters of your life — what calls to you at thirty may look quite different at fifty, and both are real.
So much of the struggle originators experience around their calling comes from carrying one or more of these myths without realising it. If you believe your calling is a command you can fail, of course it feels like pressure. Of course it brings shame when life interrupts. Let's put those myths down.

You were asked for
Here's how I understand a calling at its core: it is magnetic. It's the pull between who you are — your distinct energy, your specific way of seeing and creating and being — and a collective that has, on some deeper level, asked for exactly that.
I believe this is connected to why we're born at all. You are not an accident. You are a manifestation — called into being, in part, because something about your particular essence was needed. And in those moments when confidence wavers, when you wonder whether what you're making matters or whether anyone will care, I think it helps to return to this: you were asked for. Not because of what you'll produce. Because of what you are.
The audience is already seated
When we think about building an audience — especially in the context of social media and marketing — the dominant framing is one of broadcasting. You put yourself out there, you push content, you try to attract attention. It's an outward effort, often tinged with anxiety.
But there's a different way to hold this. The people who need your novel, your music, your coaching, your art — they already exist. They may not have heard of you yet. They have no conscious awareness of you at all. But they are open. They are receptive. Something in them is already leaning toward what you haven't yet given them — the story that will satisfy in a way nothing quite has, the sound that moves them somewhere new, the words that finally name what they've felt but couldn't say.
They're already seated. Your work is to show up on stage.
Activation, not force
This connects directly to how I think about manifesting. Manifesting isn't only about the actions you take to make something happen — the strategy, the consistency, the effort, all of which matter. It's also about getting into a particular flow state where what was always there simply activates. Like a magnet finding its charge.

You just cleared the channel. And the people who were already looking for you? The magnet does its quiet, powerful work.
