Changing the Record: Why Your Breakthrough Might Not Be Where You're Looking
Has anyone ever told you to ‘change the record’? No matter how they meant it, this is actually a profound energetic principle when trying to manifest the life you want.
When we're stuck in a particular life area, our instinct is to focus harder, analyse deeper, and apply more effort to that exact problem. We think: if only I could decode what's wrong with my career, my love life, my creative block – then I'll finally break through.
But here's what Spirit keeps showing me in consultation after consultation: the answer is almost never in the direction you're looking.
The Einstein Principle
There's a quote often attributed to Einstein: "We cannot solve our problems with the same level of thinking that created them."
Energetically, this is profound. When we come to divination or spiritual guidance with a presenting problem – much like visiting a doctor – we arrive with well-rehearsed stories. These narratives have been told and retold, particularly around work, romance, and family. Our questions come from entrenched beliefs, and quite often, those very beliefs are part of what keeps us stuck.
If you've been trying to build confidence at work for months or years with no real shift, it's not because you need to try harder or dig deeper into your workplace dynamics. It's because you're adding more weight to an already overloaded side of the scales.
Balancing the Scales
Picture old-fashioned weighing scales. When one side is too heavy, we don't solve the problem by piling on more weight. We balance it by adding weight to the other side.
This is exactly how energy works.
If you've been struggling to feel seen and valued at work, the guidance isn't necessarily about workplace strategies. It's about asking: where else in your life do you already feel seen? Where is it easier to experience confidence, appreciation, or a sense of belonging?
Maybe it's in your friendships. Maybe it's in a hobby. Maybe it's in the moments when you're walking in nature or creating something just for yourself, with no external validation required.
The work is to amplify that energy – to switch on your mojo in those areas where flow already exists – and then watch as that elevated frequency naturally spills over into the "problem" area.
Raising the Waterline
Think of it as raising a waterline. When you elevate your energy in any area of life, the whole system rises. You're not compartmentalised – your sense of worth, your confidence, your magnetism doesn't operate in silos. It's all connected.
So if you've been placing all your weight, meaning, and identity into your romantic life – expecting one person to see you in a very specific way – the guidance might be to shift focus. How can you feel seen in your support network as a whole? In your community? How are you creating dynamics, whether through work, friendships, or creative pursuits, where you experience belonging, nurturing, and appreciation?
This isn't about abandoning your desire for love. It's about not burdening that one area with such heavy stories and expectations that it can barely breathe.
The Courage to Change the Subject
Here's where it gets uncomfortable: sometimes we resist ease.
Some of us are unconsciously drawn to complexity. We've learned to associate challenge with meaning, and ease with superficiality. This can actually be a soul-level decision – we incarnate into this physical world precisely because it offers texture, narrative, time delays between desire and manifestation. It's the perfect jumping-off point for soul expansion.
But there's a difference between choosing growth-oriented challenge and clinging to unnecessary suffering.
In my work, I see this most often in romantic relationships – or what we might call "situationships." Dynamics where someone's needs aren't quite met, where there's inherent doubt about if or when they'll be valued, where they're being fed scraps with a hint that reciprocity might come later.
Often, these patterns echo early life conditioning. If we had caregivers who were emotionally or physically absent, who didn't help us feel seen or safe, we unconsciously recreate that familiar dynamic in adulthood – even while our conscious mind is desperately reaching for the opposite.
We end up manifesting ambiguity around our worth, not because we're failing at manifesting, but because our unconscious patterning is running the show.
Where Are You Resisting Ease?
As we move into this new year, the invitation is to get honest about where you're repeating narratives that no longer serve you. Where are you holding onto unnecessary complexity? What are you giving too much patience to, too much time and energy, when the energetic message is simply: this is complicated because it's not right?
Manifesting is meant to be a receptive experience. Yet so often we approach it with laboured, controlling energy. We confuse being proactive with being a control freak, trying to push something into being rather than allowing it to arrive.
The courage required here is the courage to detach – even temporarily – from conversations or dynamics where your worth is in question at a core level. To have the bravery to make another life area the lead topic for a while. To change the record.
The Practice: Small Mercies and Entry Points
If you're feeling profoundly stuck, the work doesn't need to be grand or impressive. It's not about achieving something notable that others will praise.
It's about the energy of reward itself.
What went right today? Even if it was fleeting – a moment of ease, a conversation that felt good, something that made you smile. These are your entry points.
What never fails to lift your mood? What small mercies exist in your daily life that you might be overlooking because you're so focused on the "big problem"?
This isn't spiritual bypassing. It's energy literacy. When you start joining these dots – acknowledging synchronicities, patterns, moments of inward reward – you create momentum. You build a frequency that naturally permeates all areas of your life, including the one you've been trying so hard to fix.
The Invitation
So if you've been banging your head against the same wall, asking the same questions, rehashing the same stories – this is your invitation to change the record.
Stop diving deeper into what's wrong. Stop analysing why you're blocked. Instead, ask yourself: where do I already have flow? Where is there ease? And how can I amplify that energy?
Trust that when you raise the waterline, all boats rise.
